This past Saturday night we decided to try out Nando's. A fast casual dining experience that specializes in Portuguese flame broiled chicken. We tried the new opened Nando's at Park Place, in Barrie, Ontario. I'll be quite frank I'd hadn't heard of this chain that originated out of Richmond B.C.
Aesthetically, the restaurant about 2,000 sq.ft. was nicely design, with high ceilings and decorated with South African art on the walls.
The concept works like this , a greeter sits at your table. After reviewing the easy to read and well organized menu, you proceed to one of the three cashiers at the back counter next to the kitchen, place your order and pay in advance. At this particular Nando's you now need to walk from one end to the other to obtain your cutlery and soft drinks. A somewhat unique offering is their soft drink dispenser which allows you to choose from hundreds of selections from the Coke, Fanta, Pepsi, to rare brands. At the time the restaurant was 60 to 70% full. There isn't a lot of space to be place your order at the rear counter nor is there plenty of room located by the lone soft drink dispenser. In addition, Nando's does a huge take out business. Customers coming to pick up their orders are entering a side door at the cash counter. On this particular evening the logistics worked well, however I could see problems occurring quickly when they were at full capacity. It's tight, line ups would quickly become frustrated not only for those in line but for those sitting at a table.
Nando's also has a liquor license so you can order wine and beer.
Our food came at once. Fast casual dining ; they certainly past the test. I had the half chicken with lemon and herb and it was extremely good. Moist, tender on par or better than Swiss Chalet. We order the Peri-Peri potato wedges which we had been told were amazing. They looked amazing and that's about it.
I left with mixed emotions about the overall concept. Truly, intrigue with place your own order in advance method.

700 people
some day soon,
an inventor,
will make a blow dryer that plays earthly music,
it won't sell,
in fact most units will become artefacts on shelves at Sears,
the tv commercials won't be particularly good,
some day soon,
a lawn mower manufacturer
will invent a gas powered mower that plays music,
it won't sell,
in fact most people won't have known,
how many days,
until we take the family out to dinner,
through a drive thru,
more importantly,
do i have to get in line a second time,
for dessert,,
we could eliminate the mail person,
if we created the post office drive-thru
do the people of Leamington revolt
and go without ketchup
four months from now,
will grocers dare stock,...ketchup,
will other condiments move in mustard, relish
700 people,
there can't be much joy in Leamington
but imagine if the City of Leamington
along with the employees
and other innovative investors took the plant,
purely by design,
and born was,
the best ketchup ever made,
Leamington's own,
darling red,

Big House, Big Home, Little House, Little Home
not all of us, but a significant number, love big homes. why is that? more to clean, more grass to cut, logically more parts that will require repair. i suppose to some degree it's a status symbol. we like spacious room versus claustrophobic size rooms. if the average canadian is like me, we sleep in our bedroom, use our bathroom, kitchen, and lastly what can be called the tv room, family room, the great room.
if we did a calculation of percentage of time spent where, on an average week or keep it simple an average day, i think we would uncover some interesting facts. i spend 1-2 hours in my car, 8-10 hours at work, 1 hour in the kitchen, 1 hour in the bathroom more like 30 minutes, 8 hours in my bedroom and let's say 2-3 hours outside. that's pretty close to 24 hours. based on your interests, you might want a big house, big yard, big kitchen. [to be finished]

thinking about creativity
now that i'm fifty, i feel i'm destined to write or at least create something memorable. we live in a world that is on fast cycle. as difficult as it is at times, we do need to slow down, observe, study, and think. this is a brand new blog for me ; i hope to entertain you and if anything give you pause to reflect.
